Fight after custody court hearing results in shooting, car crashing into Roseville bar
An emotional child custody hearing resulted in two people being shot, one person in custody and a longtime Macomb County bar closed following a car crash, according to police.
The scene unfolded Tuesday after a proceeding in Macomb County Circuit Court in Mount Clemens and ended at Grady’s Lounge on Gratiot Avenue in Roseville.
“Family members of one of the parents became unhappy with the outcome of the hearing, leading to an altercation,” Eastpointe police said Wednesday.
The second parent left Mount Clemens with family members and drove to Eastpointe. They were followed by family members of the other parent, police said.
According to police, the incident escalated on Gratiot near Pep Boys on Bell Street, a few blocks south of 10 Mile Road, where both of the feuding parents fired gunshots at each other.
One person sustained a gunshot wound to the arm and was transported to an area hospital for medical treatment. The other person sustained a graze wound to the head. Medics provided treatment to that person at the scene, but the patient refused further medical care.
During the commotion, one of the parties crashed into Grady’s Lounge.
“I didn’t see anything, but I definitely heard it,” said Lorraine Boike, a longtime bartender at Grady’s. “I heard a screeching of tires and then a loud bam! It sounded like an explosion as the car broke through the building.”
Bar manager Kelly Matta said the impact tore through a wall and caused stress fractures in the building. She said the bar is closed indefinitely while a restoration crew works to repair the damage.
“It’s really sad that people have to resort to gun violence and put other people risk,” she said.
Grady’s Lounge, which is owned by Kelly’s mother, Delores Lindstrom, celebrates its 39th anniversary this month.
The manager said this isn’t the first time the bar has encountered damage. Last week, an intoxicated customer who was refused service, drove through the fence of the rear patio.
As far as the shooting incident, the victims remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Police said the 30-year-old male suspect fled, but was arrested several hours later in Dearborn.
Detectives expected to present their case to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday for a determination on charges.
Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Detective Brian Showers at 586-445-9415.
